Chidimma Adetshina the beauty queen who received xenophobic<\/a> abuse in South Africa<\/a> and became the subject of a government investigation has told the BBC she will be seeking therapy because of the saga.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/a>She was a finalist in the Miss South Africa beauty contest, sparked criticism as despite being a South African citizen, her father is Nigerian and her mother has Mozambican roots.<\/p>\n

She quit the contest last month \u2013 the day after the home affairs department announced that her mother may have committed \u201cidentity theft\u201d to become a South African national.<\/p>\n

Adetshina was then invited to enter Miss Universe Nigeria \u2013 which she won \u2013 but said she had been \u201csuppressing her emotions\u201d throughout.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s just not a nice feeling, I think I\u2019ve been avoiding it a lot and only now it\u2019s started to cloud me,\u201d the 23-year-old told BBC Pidgin in her first round of interviews since winning Saturday\u2019s contest.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something I will work on and see a therapist,\u201d she added with tears running down her face, \u201cbecause I feel like I have been suppressing my emotions\u2026 because what has happened\u2026 it wasn\u2019t a minor thing, it was actually really major.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adetshina, who previously said she was born in the South African township of Soweto, told BBC Pidgin she could not comment on the South African government\u2019s ongoing investigation into her nationality, as it was a \u201clegal matter\u201d.<\/p>\n

Despite having a difficult few weeks, the law student said becoming Miss Universe Nigeria was a \u201cvery powerful moment\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven though it was a rough path for you, you really stepped up,\u201d Adetshina said, describing a message she had been telling herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I really give myself that title of a strong black African woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although many Nigerians were pleased to see her triumph, some felt the way she had entered the competition was unfair on the other contestants.<\/p>\n

Adetshina only competed in the final stages of the competition, whereas the other contestants had waged a longer campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do get where people are coming from, but at the end of the day I also had my own journey, I had my fair share of going through the process,\u201d Adetshina said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere might have been a slight difference, but I feel like I also went through the journey that they went through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI still see myself proudly South African\u2026 I still see myself proudly Nigerian,\u201d she told the BBC.<\/p>\n

Nigeria\u2019s newest beauty queen said she had extended her stay in the country of her father\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n

Having only visited as a young child 20 years ago, she plans to \u201cget to know\u201d more of Nigeria \u2013 then in November, she will be off to Mexico for the international Miss Universe competition.<\/p>\n

As Nigeria\u2019s representative, she will compete against beauty queens from across the world, including Mia le Roux, who won this year\u2019s Miss South Africa contest.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, South Africa\u2019s investigation into Adetshina\u2019s nationality continues.<\/p>\n

In its initial report, the home affairs department said that although her mother may have committed identity theft, Adetshina \u201ccould not have participated in the alleged unlawful actions of her mother as she was an infant at the time\u201d.<\/p>\n

Asked what message she would send the world following her turbulent experience, Adetshina said: \u201cSet those goals for yourself.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt might seem too scary but set them and always do everything in your power to make sure you achieve them.\u201d<\/p>\n
