The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) deputy national campaign chairman, Nana Akomea has expressed deep shock at the level of panic that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has shown over the prospect of a presidential debate between the Vice President and presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and their candidate, former President John Mahama.
Speaking on Joy News last Thursday, Nana Akomea said it was fine if the NDC did not want a debate, but the plethora of excuses the NDC has come up with to avoid a debate shows deep panic within the Party at the mere prospect of a debate with Dr Bawumia.
Nana Akomea outlined some of the NDC reasons for dodging a debate, including “Bawumia has not debated market women; Bawumia has not debated with the media or held a press conference; Bawumia should first debate with NDC members at Parliament.”
Some other claims by the NDC are “Bawumia in his call for a debate, has not shown enough respect for John Mahama; Bawumia has shown belligerence and “patapa” in his call for a debate; Bawumia has not shown accountability for his stewardship as Vice President.”
The NDC even attacked the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) for proposing to organise the debate, describing the Institute as pandering to the whims of the NPP.
Nana Akomea said the frivolous excuses the NDC is putting up every day, portrays a deep sense of panic and alarm at the prospect of putting John Mahama in a debate with Dr Bawumia.
Nana Akomea said, ironically, a debate will give John Mahama and the NDC a chance to hold Bawumia up to all their charges against him. It is therefore shocking that the NDC is doing all it can to avoid a debate.
Nana Akomea concluded that this should signal to the electorate that the NDC knows that John Mahama is no match for Dr Bawumia.
