Ghana has made a strong start at the 2024 International Tennis Federation (ITF)/Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) Western (2) African Junior Teams’ Competition for 12&Under, securing victories against Côte d’Ivoire and Benin in the first two days of the tournament.
The event, hosted at the Ghana Tennis Club in Adabraka, Accra, commenced on Tuesday (20 August) and will run until Saturday (24 August).
This is the second edition of the regional competition, which features teams from Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo, and the host nation, Ghana.
The tournament offers a chance for the top boys’ and girls’ teams to qualify for the 2024 12&Under African Junior Teams’ Competition.
Ghana’s campaign began with a dominant 3-0 victory over Côte d’Ivoire on the opening day.
Jeff Frimpong set the tone with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 win over Daylaor Toto Yohane in the boys’ singles. This was followed by Eric Toto’s 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Kadjo Nguessan Christ I Yvan.
The boys’ doubles saw Frimpong and Ethan Delali Dzidzornu team up to defeat the Ivorian duo of Yohane and Ekou Louis Joseph Emmanuel 6-1, 6-1, sealing a comprehensive win for Ghana.
On Wednesday (21 August), Ghana continued their winning streak against Benin. In the boys’ singles, Frimpong and Toto delivered again, with Frimpong defeating Bebo Ange 6-2, 6-0, and Toto overcoming Ivan Alowakinnou 7-6(4), 6-2.
The doubles match saw Frimpong and Dzidzornu secure a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over the Benin pair, ensuring another 3-0 win for Ghana.
However, Ghana’s girls’ team faced a tougher challenge on the same day, suffering a 3-0 defeat to Benin.
In the singles, Georgette Nartey lost to Tena Kaouagou 1-6, 0-6, while Anna Nyarko was defeated by Honfoga Gisele 2-6, 1-6.
The doubles match offered a glimmer of hope, but Nartey and Nyarko were ultimately beaten by Gisele and Bayaki Moukiata 2-6, 6-4, 3-10.
