Ghanaian musical duo Michael Boafo and Tony Boafo popularly known as DopeNation have said the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) has not been fair to them.
DopeNation said the organisers of the awards scheme have eliminated the “Group of the Year” category from the annual event.
Speaking on Asaase 99.5 Accra’s Between Hours Show on Tuesday (11 April), the duo said: “We are twins, we are a group that is what we stand for.”
“So musically, when you take that category off, you take away our recognition and what we stand for.”
It has been three years since the award scheme took the “Group of the Year” category off.
DopeNation added: “We are sure they have tangible reasons for that but they should also look at it from our point of view.”
“We have been active and we have taken artists up, we have produced artists, we have written for artists, we’ve been dropping our own songs, we’ve been on tours,” they told the host of the show Naa Ashorkor.
“At least for the efforts that we are putting in and still at the end of the day there is no nomination for ‘Group of the Year,’ but we rather have to battle it out with solo artists.”
“It really hurts when another country has an award scheme and they nominate us as a group and we have to fly there to represent the country as a group. Meanwhile, back in our home (Ghana), we don’t have a group category,” the duo added.
